A model of a house-thatching needle (mita-atualu), made out of a flat bamboo stick. It has a sharp pointed end with a hole cut near it. (A lifesized house-thatching needle is about one metre long.) It is known as "atuaku" or "erem lu" by the Meriam people. It was collected by C. Hedley and A.R. McCulloch in 1907. (48x2.0cm)
